6 Times Celeb Ensembles Looked Just Like Prison Uniforms
By Tamara Rahoumi
Back in 2014, a Michigan county jail banned orange jumpsuits following the roaring success of the Netflix series Orange is the New Black, deeming the uniform suddenly, and unacceptably, “cool.” In their stead, the jail brought back the classic black-and-white striped jumpsuit. But if celebrity style is any indication of what’s on trend, then orange might not be the only new black. As evidence would have it, celebs are clearly just as big on embracing the all-orange look as they are the black-and- white stripes. Here are six times that A-list stars proved that coming up with prison uniforms that stand completely apart from what’s “in” might require a little more time at the drawing board.
EXHIBIT A: Melissa George – Orange (Jump) Suit
Melissa George’s orange jumpsuit – err, suit – is almost too easy to confuse with regulation garb. The Hunted actress’ silver pumps and red lip dress up the look, but they’re hardly enough to counteract the serious prison vibes we’re getting here.
EXHIBIT B: Rihanna – “Prison-Stripe” Pajama-Style Pantsuit
Rihanna can make almost anything work (work, work, work), but she got herself a bit in over her head with this pantsuit that she wore for a performance at the Westfield Stratford in London. Unfortunately, the outfit looks more like a loose, prison-style pajama set than a look fit for the pre-show red carpet.
EXHIBIT C: Miley Cyrus – Orange Jumpsuit
Just in case the baggy, bright orange jumpsuit wasn’t enough, Miley Cyrus rocked this look with an oversized, and just as orange, puffer coat. Thankfully, the singer’s pop-eye slinky glasses and trademark tongue wag serve as a distraction from the orange overload.
EXHIBIT D: Kelly Osbourne – Orange Jumpsuit
A chic gold- accented belt and sleek silhouette make this orange jumpsuit that Kelly Osbourne wore to New York Fashion Week slightly chicer than its loose-fitting counterparts, but even the best accessories can’t rid the ensemble of its prison-esque look.
EXHIBIT E: Kendall Jenner – Striped Jumpsuit
Swapping out horizontal black-and- white stripes for vertical, Kendell Jenner’s sequined Marc Jacobs jumpsuit, which she paired with a pair of strappy sandals, still bears a pretty uncanny resemblance to traditional black-and- white prison attire.
EXHIBIT F: Kristin Cavallari – Striped Maxi Dress
Even though she went with a loose, flowing maxi instead of a two-piece look, Kristin Cavallari’s black-and- white striped dress isn’t too different than what she’d be wearing if she was doing hard time – minus the Céline.
